Our God is a giving God. Our world, our families, our lives, our salvation are all freely given. Jesus calls us to transform our hearts to be like God's, "You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect ." Matthew 5:48
Part of being a disciple of Jesus is to be giving. Our giving should also be intentional. We are entrusted with time, talents and treasure. The one who knows that everything is a gift from God the Father looks for ways to give back Him--from a grateful heart. Our giving back to God the Father should also be sacrificial in nature, patterned after the example of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Tithe
The word "tithe" means tenth or 10%. Tithing, or giving ten percent of your income, isn't giving something to God. It's giving back what was His to begin with. All that we have, or hope to have, comes from God the Father. The Bible says that tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything. It teaches us to always put God first in our lives.
We encourage you to look at your giving in the context of what it means to truly follow Jesus. Take some time, in prayer, on where you are in your giving. Is your giving planned? Is it a priority? What percentage do you currently give back to God?
